Barranco

Barranco was at the beginning of the 20th century home to famous Peruvian writers and artists which gave the district a unique character.

The daily life in Barranco is more relaxed and quieter than in the rest of Lima. The city center invites you to stroll around, visit old colonial and republican houses and enjoy the numerous other amazing sights that Barranco has to offer.

The district of Barranco was officially established on the 26th of October 1874. It is located south of Miraflores directly at the Pacific Ocean. Barranco is with 3.33 km² the second smallest district of Lima.

Puente de Los Suspiros

If you head towards the ocean you will soon reach the famous "Puente de Los Suspiros". The "Bridge of Sighs" is the district's landmark. It was inaugurated on the 14th of February 1876. Since then the wooden bridge withstood the War of the Pacific and earthquakes, but had to be repaired several times and was cut down in the middle of the 20th century to its actual length of 31 m. As it always was, young couples meet at this romantic place in Barranco. Tradition says that the one, who makes a wish and then crosses the bridge for the first time without taking a breath, will have his wish fulfilled. The great Peruvian chansonière Chabuca Granda honored the 'Puente de los Suspíros' by dedicating one of her songs to her.

The Magic Water Circuit

In May 2007 a water and light show called the Circuito Magico del Agua (The Magic Water Circuit) was inaugurated. The Magic Water Circuit has the Guinness Book record for the largest fountain complex in the world, displaying 13 distinct fountains and many are interactive. All of the fountains are illuminated at night, many with continuously changing color schemes. A colorful laser light program synchronized with classical and Peruvian music makes the fountains sparkle and shine as the water flows in unique patterns and shapes.

The Parque de la Reserva was originally opened in 1929 to commemorate all the civilian reservists who fought in the defence of Lima during the War of the Pacific. But more than 65 years later Parque de la Reserva became one of Lima's most visited tourist attractions.

Getting Wet in Lima’s Fountains

Not all the fountains are of the simple stop and stare variety, a few of them are interactive. The cupila Visitable breaks you in slowly, giving you the opportunity to walk beneath a flowing dome of jects. The Tunel d elas Sorpresas is 38-yard walkway through a tunnel of water.

The real star of the show in terms of sheer fun is the ever-polar Laberinto del Ensueño. Getting to the center of the "meze" is more a matter of timing than navigation; a mistaimed stride can land you right on top of a suddenly spewing jet of water.

Fuente de la Fantasía Water Show

The park’s showpiece fountain is the Fuente de la Fantasía (Fantasia Fountain). Each night, the 130-yard-long fountain bursts into life with a choreographed show of water, lasers and music. The show takes place three times a night, beginning at 7:15 pm, 8:15 pm and 9:30 pm. It’s a good way to end your stroll through Lima’s charming Magic Water Circuit.
